Profits surge at Avon Technologies as US military prepares troops for chemical, biological or nuclear attack

Profits have surged at Melksham-based Avon Technologies as the US military prepares troops for chemical, biological or nuclear attack.

Revenues grew 13 per cent to $275 million, while orders of $364.4 million were received – up 41 per cent. Profit before tax was up 81 per cent on the previous year at $25.3 million.

The group has continued to win big orders from the American military. Last week it confirmed three separate orders from the US Department of Defense’s Advanced System for Protection and Integrated Reduction of Encumbrances Hood/Mask Interface program.

The three contracts will cover the design and development of a solution to optimise integration between currently-fielded M50 and M53A1 masks – designed to protect wearers from toxins from a chemical, biological, radioactive or nuclear attack and widely used across the US Military – and the Army’s protective garment hoods and suits.

The group – which rebranded from Avon Protection to Avon Technologies earlier this year – said it had a record orderbook of $225 million, including a £38 million order from the Ministry of Defence for respirators and filters, helmet orders from the US military, a respirator contract with the Australian Defence Force, and rebreather orders from the navies of New Zealand and Germany.
