Swindon homebuilding centre launches anniversary year with three-day show

Swindon’s National Self Build & Renovation Centre will kick off its 20th anniversary year with a three-day show helping visitors turn their homebuilding ambitions into practical plans.

The National Self Build & Renovation Show runs from Friday, January 8, to Sunday, January 10, 2027, bringing together specialist exhibitors, independent advice and expert-led tours. A birthday party on the Friday will launch the centre’s milestone celebrations.

Originally conceived by BuildStore, the venue welcomed its first visitors in January 2007. Since 2014, it has been owned and operated by The Homebuilding Centre Limited, an employee-owned business. It achieved B Corp certification in 2025, recognising its commitment to responsible business practices.

The winter show, taking place on a new date for 2027, will offer free advance tickets and support for people planning self-builds, renovations, extensions and home improvements.

Visitors will be able to discuss their projects directly with specialists, compare products and explore options for creating more comfortable, energy-efficient homes.

Exhibitors will cover insulation, timber-frame construction, windows and doors, heating and renewable technologies, with advice aimed at helping homeowners identify approaches suited to their properties and budgets.

Across two theatres, expert talks, panel discussions and real-life case studies will tackle the practical decisions involved in planning and delivering a project.

The Sustainability Theatre programme will cover finding land, funding and finance, working with architects and designers, planning, project management, renovation principles and VAT reclaims.

Meanwhile, the Build It Theatre will explore construction methods and home improvement products, including timber frames, insulation, flooring, stoves, kitchens and garden rooms.

Homeowners will share their experiences, while discussions will examine heat and energy, building systems and overheating homes, helping visitors weigh up comfort, performance and long-term running costs.

Beyond the theatres, guided tours will showcase the centre’s Renovation House, New Build Zone, Passivhaus exhibits and Retrofit Zone.

The displays offer a chance to see building techniques and technologies in context, with experienced guides explaining different approaches to constructing new homes and improving existing properties.

Free one-to-one appointments with relevant experts will provide tailored guidance, whether visitors are gathering initial ideas or working through specific challenges on projects already underway.

Organisers recommend arriving early, bringing plans or sketches and preparing questions to make the most of the event.

The National Self Build & Renovation Centre is at Lydiard Fields, Swindon, SN5 8UB, just off Junction 16 of the M4.
