Phil Smith to step down as Business West MD after 30 years

The managing director of Business West has announced his intention to retire from the business support organisation after 30 years.

Phil Smith joined Business West over 30 years ago, and since 2005 has steered the company through several periods of growth, mergers and transformation, and navigated significant challenges including recessions, Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic as MD.

It has been a fascinating experience,” said Phil. “I’ve enjoyed playing my role in the exciting and ever-changing business landscape. I have worked with so many talented individuals in this role; people who are genuinely passionate about making our region a great place to live, learn and work.

“I’ve always aimed to make our own organisation a great place to work too; a place where every team member feels valued. I am confident that my talented team will continue to deliver impact and drive our mission forward.

“Over the next six months, I will remain focused on progressing our strategic plans and ensuring a smooth transition.”

Colin Skellett, chair of Business West said: “I would like to thank Phil Smith for his three decades of outstanding service, first working in partnership with John Savage in delivering major redevelopment projects across Bristol and growing our commercial arm, then since 2005 as managing director running the whole Business West organisation.

“Phil is a highly respected and popular leader; deeply committed to building a great company culture and delivering lasting impact for our region. He leaves Business West in a strong financial position and very well placed to deliver even more for its members and the whole of the South West.

“The new CEO role is an opportunity for a talented and committed individual to take the enviable platform that Phil has helped create and stamp their own vision on where it goes next.”

The recruitment process for a new CEO is now underway, with interviews taking place in October and November.
