Wadworth provides an update on new brewery plans

Plans by Devizes brewer Wadworth to move to a new brewery in the town are still on track, says the firm.

The family brewer announced last November that it is planning to leave its landmark Northgate building – where beer has been brewed for 135 years – in favour of a modern complex at London Road, on a site previously occupied by online book vendor Selectabook as a distribution centre.

It says the iconic red brick Victorian brewery is too large and unsuitable for the needs of modern brewing.

This week the company said it had appointed Devizes-based Gaiger as building contractor and Dolman, also based in Devizes, as surveyor. The majority of suppliers and contractors will come from the local area, it said.

The brewery also has committed to creating a sustainable brewery. The brewery will be lit with sensor controlled LEDs and a new lightweight roof will improve insulation and allow for a greater use of natural light. The firm also intends to use solar panels to provide energy for the site.

It has also pledged to reduce the demand on local water sources by drawing water from boreholes, and reducing tanker deliveries by producing its own food grade nitrogen on-site.

Even the beer will be more in a more environmentally-friendly manner, with an ultra-efficient steam generator that reduces the brewery boiler warming times from 4.5 hours to seven minutes, and smaller batch sizes that will be brewed more frequently to reduce energy use.

“The new brewery will allow us to diversify our beer offer and in turn, support our pubs and customers more effectively,” said the firm.

“We will continue to brew our traditional ales including 6X, Horizon and Henry’s IPA alongside a new beer portfolio.”
