Nationwide marks National Apprenticeship Week with intake announcement
Nationwide is increasing the number of apprentice, graduate and intern opportunities it is providing by more than 240 percent. The Swindon-based mutual made the announcement during National Apprenticeship Week.
This year, the society will be taking on 80 advanced apprentices, 15 higher apprentices, 100 graduates and 50 intern placements compared to 22 apprentices, 38 graduates and 12 interns last year.
Nationwide is a Living Wage employer and pays its apprentices a minimum of £7.85 per hour – this compares with the minimum UK apprentice hourly wage of £2.73.
Nationwide’s HR director Ann Brown said: “We strongly believe by taking on more apprentices we are not only helping people start their careers but also improving our workforce by identifying, developing and retaining talented people from various different backgrounds with fresh ideas.
“If you’re interested in working for an organisation that is committed to doing the right thing and that will support and challenge you as you progress in your career then I would encourage you to become a Nationwide apprentice.”
Isobel Anderson, 19 joined Nationwide in September last year and works in business management. She said: “I chose Nationwide’s scheme over other apprenticeship schemes because I had heard great things about the opportunities and support available here, as well as general praise for how the company treats their employees and the working environment.
“I didn’t really know what I wanted to do so I wanted to join somewhere that would allow me to learn, develop and explore different opportunities to help me find my strengths.
“I would love for my career to progress within Nationwide. Once I have finished my Apprenticeship I want to continue exploring opportunities to learn, develop and experience new things within my area, and also across other parts of the business.”
The apprentice programme is open to all age groups above the age of 16 years-old, as well as those starting a new career. As part of their role, the apprentices are given real jobs which contribute towards the work being done in that particular area of the business. While on the scheme apprentices will also obtain a formal NVQ qualification.
