MINI milestone marked at Swindon manufacturing plant

BMW Group marked a major milestone this week as workers at the MINI Plant Swindon gathered to celebrate the site’s 25th anniversary.

The Swindon facility, which produces body pressings and sub-assemblies for MINI models built in Oxford, has been a cornerstone of the brand’s UK production network since it opened in 2001.

Over the past 25 years, the plant has played a vital role in supporting MINI’s global success, supplying millions of components to vehicles sold worldwide.

Celebrations at the site brought together employees, management, and local community representatives, with special events held throughout the day to recognise the workforce’s contribution.

Long-serving employees were honoured for their dedication, while displays showcased the plant’s evolution from its early days to its current high-tech operations.

Plant director Lisa Turner described the anniversary as a “proud moment” for everyone involved.

“Our success over the past 25 years is down to the skill, commitment, and passion of our people,” she said. “Swindon has consistently delivered high-quality components that are essential to every MINI built in Oxford.”

Since its opening, the plant has undergone significant transformation, embracing advanced manufacturing technologies and sustainability initiatives.

Today, it operates with a strong focus on efficiency and reducing environmental impact, aligning with BMW Group’s wider commitment to greener production.

The anniversary also comes at a pivotal time for MINI as the brand transitions towards an electric future. The Swindon plant is expected to play a key role in supporting this shift, ensuring that UK production remains competitive and future-ready.

Local officials praised the plant’s long-standing contribution to the regional economy, noting that it has provided stable employment and helped develop skills across the Swindon area. The facility currently employs hundreds of people and supports many more jobs through its supply chain.

As part of the celebrations, employees took part in tours, exhibitions, and community-focused activities, reinforcing the strong ties between the plant and the local area.

Looking ahead, BMW Group reaffirmed its commitment to UK manufacturing, with Swindon remaining a central part of MINI’s production network.
