Clean-heat firm Luthmore banks £4.5m to scale zero-emissions boiler

Chippenham engineering firm Luthmore has secured £4.5m from existing investors as it ramps up the commercial rollout of what it says is the world’s first battery-enabled, zero-emissions boiler.

The funding round includes investment from The FSE Group and the South West Investment Fund, with backers backing the company’s push to decarbonise UK homes. Luthmore said the capital would support the next phase of growth for its flagship Luthmore One product, an electric combi boiler designed as an alternative where heat pumps are unsuitable.

The company has also been selected as one of five UK businesses to join Connected Places Catapult’s Innovate UK-funded Scale-Up Support Programme for Transport and Construction.

Over the next six months, Luthmore will receive bespoke support on investment readiness, leadership, team structure, growth planning and sales, as well as introductions to potential investors.

Ralph Singleton, Head of Equity South West at The FSE Group, said Luthmore was entering an important stage as it sought to build commercial momentum.

“Luthmore is a great example of the innovative businesses we want to support in the South West,” he said. “The team has made significant progress in developing its technology and is now entering an important stage as it looks to build commercial momentum and bring the Luthmore One to more UK homes.”

Luthmore is now installing the Luthmore One in UK homes following a successful SAP assessment, a Technical Note from the Building Research Establishment and the training of installers through its own programme. The battery-enabled electric combi boiler has a recommended retail price of £4,950 plus VAT and comes with a five-year guarantee.

The company is also strengthening its commercial operation. It has appointed Marcus Quarterman, formerly Financial Director at Prolectric and previously with Dyson and PwC, as Chief Financial Officer. Luthmore is also looking to expand its Chippenham office space as the team grows.

Chief executive Herve Deherang said the investment and external support reflected growing recognition of the technology across investors, technical accreditors, installers, specifiers and government.

“Luthmore is growing quickly, and we are grateful to both our long-term investors, and new partners, for their faith in the product, and the business,” he said. “This is a truly exciting chapter in Luthmore’s story, and we are building a strong commercial team to support this next stage.”

The company recently introduced the product to Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh, with support from Bath MP Wera Hobhouse. It hopes the political engagement will help accelerate adoption in homes where conventional clean-heating options are not practical.

Quarterman said his priority would be ensuring the new funds are deployed effectively to drive commercial success and attract further investment.
