Plans to turn former Nationwide site into homes revealed
Plans have been revealed to redevelop offices formerly owned by the Swindon-headquartered building society Nationwide into homes.
Warwickshire-based Redford Developments has acquired Wakefield House, the 200,000sq ft former Nationwide offices on Pipers Way in Swindon and its grounds.
It intends to build up to 228 new homes on the 9.4 acre site.
Nationwide vacated Wakefield House in 2020. The building was formerly the HQ of Burma Castrol and has also been used by Smiths News and Infosys.
Redford Developments has appointed Corstorphine & Wright to lead masterplanning and initial design work, with public consultation expected before summer and a planning application to follow.
Chief executive Richard Mees said the scheme is intended to create an “exemplary new community” focused on placemaking and sustainability.
He said the location, close to employment, schools and transport links, makes it well suited to help meet housing demand in Swindon.
The site is roughly 1.9 miles from Swindon Railway Station and 2.2 miles from Junction 15 of the M4, supporting its appeal for redevelopment.
