Wadworth opens new brewery – over the road from its old home

Devizes-based brewer Wadworth has opened its new multi-million-pound brewery.

The was opened on Thursday, September 7 over the road from the iconic red brick Victorian building which has been its home for 138 years.

The brewery was officially opened by the mayor of Devizes, John Stevens CBE, along with guests of honour Sam and George, the shire horses who pull a dray to deliver beer to local pubs.

Wadworth announced at the end of 2019 that it was looking for new premises in the town, as its Northgate Street brewery was “nearing the end of its useful life.”

In November 2021 the company announced its new brewery would be built at London Road, on a site previously occupied by online book vendor Selectabook as a distribution centre.

The build started in 2022, with the state-of-the-art brew kit, provided by BrauKon in Germany, arriving over 14 days and 29 lorries in December.

Throughout 2023 the brewhouse, distribution warehouse and offices were built by Devizes-based construction contractor Gaiger.

Once Wadworth has moved its entire operation to the new building, work will begin on building 102 houses on the old site, which will be called Brewery Wharf.

The houses – which will be equipped with air source heat pumps and electric vehicle chargers – will be built by Chippenham-based developer Backhouse.

The redevelopment will see the retention of the Grade II listed brewery tower.
