New MD appointed at Swindon Silicon Systems

Jerry Loraine has been appointed as the new managing director of Swindon Silicon Systems – designer of assistance, safety and sensor systems solutions for the motor industry – following the retirement of Geoff Hall.

Jerry brings over twenty five years’ experience in the semiconductor industry, during which he has driven creative teams to deliver ICs and complete products into high volume emerging markets, such as Wi-Fi in portable equipment, low power global positioning and OTT wireless video.

“This is a fantastic opportunity which will allow us to build on our thirty-five years in application specific integrated circuit design”, he said. “Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems, in which we are global leaders, is set to expand massively when China makes it mandatory.”

Last year the company was bought by Sensata Technologies, the $2.4bn global business employing more than 17,000 people, and based in the Netherlands. The takeover coincided with a move by Swindon Silicon Systems to larger premises at Interface Business Park in Wootton Bassett.

“Being part of Sensata will also open up new markets for our ASICs,” said Jerry. “It means that not only can we develop further our automotive pressure sensing expertise, we can also transfer our knowledge and experience of micro-electromechanical systems and micro-power solutions into wider applications such as factory automation, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, industrial process control and remote sensing.

“The future for Swindon Silicon Systems looks very good indeed.”
