New role for Bristol MP as PM shakes up top team
Bristol MP Darren Jones has been handed a top job at 10 Downing Street after prime minister Keir Starmer shakes up his top team.
Darren Jones, who has spent the last year as the chief secretary to the Treasury, has been appointed to the new role of chief secretary to the Prime Minister.
It is a new role – the position did not exist before today (September 1). Downing Street said he would ““directly oversee work across Government to support the delivery of the Prime Minister’s priorities”
The Bristol North West MP, who grew up in a council flat in Lawrence Weston, was first elected to Parliament in 2017. Before that he was a lawyer at Womble Bond Dickinson.
He credits the last Labour government with lifting himself and his family out of poverty by introducing the Minimum Wage.
He has quickly risen through the ranks since first being elected, becoming second in command to Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves when Labour came to power last summer.
