Wiltshire businesses back event to support demobbed soldiers
A host of local businesses promoted career opportunities to Army leavers and their families on Wednesday.
The Living and Working in Wiltshire and Swindon transition fair, run by Wiltshire Council, the Army’s 43 (Wessex) Brigade and MoD’s Career Transition Partnership, took place at Tidworth Leisure Centre.
The event was also supported by the Swindon and Wiltshire Enterprise Partnership and Swindon Borough Council.
Hundreds of military personnel attended the event where businesses from across Wiltshire and Swindon promoted their services showcasing the wide range of available jobs in the area from advanced engineering and aviation to transport and health care.
They included big national companies like Amey, Serco and First Great Western as well as successful local businesses like Latchways, Bowood Estate and LDE.
Officers from Wiltshire Council and a wide range of partner organisations were also on hand to offer advice on a host of useful services to help those looking to live in the county including leisure, housing and education.
A series of guest speakers talked about the transition from the army back to ‘civvy street’ and offered support to army leavers as they embark on their future career.
They included Sean O’Keeffe, an ex-soldier now running his own award-winning company The Training Wing, Louise Whiting, an ex- Gunner officer who now runs Stonehenge Campervans and Waves Training Solutions, Chris Simpson of Wiltshire Business Support Service, and Nikki Peterson, HIVE Brigade Manager West.
Wiltshire Council leader Jane Scott said: “Military personnel and their families play such a big part in our county so it’s important Wiltshire Council and our partners continually support them.
“We want to keep these highly-skilled people living and working in Wiltshire and the number of businesses on show today shows what fantastic opportunities there are for them.
“We want to support key events like this that showcase local businesses and gives them the opportunity to network and share ideas.”
