TLT ranked second in Clean Energy Legal League Table, and one of best employers for gender equality

Bristol-headquartered law firm TLT has been ranked second in Clean Energy Pipeline’s 2023 Clean Energy Legal League Table, recognising the firm’s position as one of the most active clean energy advisers in the UK.

The Clean Energy Legal League Table ranks the world’s top 20 law firms that acted as a legal adviser on clean energy project finance and M&A deals in 2022.

The annual ranking includes law firms who have advised a mix of developers, companies and investors on transactions for global clean energy project developments and technologies.

TLT ranked as the second most active adviser in terms of the number of M&A deals completed in 2022. The ranking is based on TLT advising on 59 clean energy M&A deals throughout the year which saw over £1.4bn of investment. The firm also ranked eleventh for the number of project finance deals, for having advised on 11 deals in 2022.

Kay Hobbs, corporate partner at TLT said: “We’re delighted to once again be ranked as one of the top three most active clean energy advisers globally in Clean Energy Pipeline’s Clean Energy Legal League Table, moving from third place in 2022 to second place in 2023.

“It has been one of the busiest years on record for the team and, again, we have been involved in some of the largest and most ground-breaking clean energy projects in the country. It’s an honour to have our work recognised in the legal league table, which reflects our position as a leader in clean energy and a go-to adviser in the sector.

“We’re grateful to all the clients and advisers we have worked with in the last year and we look forward to continue working together helping them to prepare for what comes next.”

The firm acts for all stakeholders including developers, debt funders, equity investors, contractors and suppliers including advising government departments on the implementation and operation of energy efficiency and renewables policy. The team regularly advises on ‘first of a kind’ projects including subsidy-free, multi-technology, energy storage, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and cleantech.

The recognition comes on the back of the firm being named one of The Times Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality – the UK’s most highly profiled and well-established listing of employers taking action and making gender equality part of their business strategy at all levels.

Gender equality is a key pillar of TLT’s strategy to 2025, with four areas of focus; redefining leadership with gender inclusion at its core, expanding flexible working, increasing senior female representation, and creating a respectful culture.

The strategy was introduced in 2019 in collaboration with the firm’s Women’s Equality Network – one of TLT’s founding networks that advises and guides the firm on best practice in terms of promoting gender equality.

Since inception, TLT has taken on a range of issues that impact gender equality in the workplace, including a fully flexible approach to working (TLT World) a dedicated pregnancy loss policy, competitive paternity and non-birthing parent leave provision.

More recent action includes a new enhanced menopause provision, and two new apprenticeship pathways to support and improve gender-distribution across the firm’s pay quartiles.

This year TLT announced a consecutive reduction in its median gender pay gap to a record-low since it began reporting and achieving its target of 33 per cent female representation at partner level two years early.

Helen Hodgkinson, chief people officer at TLT said: “It is an honour to be named in The Times’ prestigious Top 50 Employers for Gender Equality 2023.

“TLT has come a long way in recent years in redressing gender imbalances and I’m proud to have these efforts recognised on a national platform. Huge congratulations to all who have helped us secure this spot in the Top 50.”
