Historic Bristol department store Bristol Guild to close

A historic independent department store in Bristol is to close in May after trading for 116 years.

Bristol Guild announced its closure on social media this morning (Wednesday).

Inspired by William Morris’ Arts & Crafts movement, the Bristol Guild of Applied Art was founded in 1908 as a co-place for artists and craftsmen and women to collaborate and sell their products.

It operated for 10 years in this co-operative model before being bought out by three local businessmen who turned it into a fully commercial venture selling high-quality Scandinavia and British furniture, design-led homeware, food and drink, and fashion accessories.

Its shop on Park Street opened in the 1940s and survived the Bristol Blitz.

Bristol Guild’s last trading day will be May 30th.
