Volkswagen unveils the new Tiguan – now the world’s most popular VW
Volkswagen has unveiled the latest iteration of its Tiguan – now officially the world’s most popular VW as drivers opt for compact SUVs over hatchbacks like the Golf.
VW says more than 7.6 million buyers have chosen the Tiguan since 2007.
The third generation offers a choice of two plug-in hybrid powertrains, with up to 100 km – or 62 miles – of all-electric running. That’s an increase of around 30 miles on the previous model.
The eHybrid powertrains both feature the same battery and 113bhp electric motor, plus a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and six-speed automatic gearbox and offer outputs of 201 bhp or 268 bhp. There will also be mild-hybrid 1.5 eTSI engines with 128bhp or 148bhp.
The new Tiguan gets a sleeker look and is 30mm longer than its predecessor, allowing for improved boot space of 37 litres and more headroom.
Inside, upgrades include VW’s latest MIB4 infotainment system, with either a 12.9 or 15-inch display, and a 10.25-inch digital dash panel with configurable views.
Volkswagen says the new model will reach dealerships as early as the first quarter of 2024. Pricing has yet to be revealed.
