Swindon trio supply Formula 1 parts as engineering firm doubles down on growth
Three former apprentices who launched their own precision engineering business just over two years ago are now machining specialist components for Formula 1 teams and other high-tech sectors from a Swindon industrial estate — and plan to create new apprenticeships as they expand.
Billet Precision, based at South Marston Industrial Estate, was founded in February 2024 by directors Will Casey, Ryan King and James Lewington, who met through a shared passion for cars more than a decade ago.
The trio, all of whom began their careers as apprentices, have built the firm into a multi-sector supplier working across motorsport, automotive, aerospace, nuclear energy, medical technology and scientific research.
The company recently hosted Swindon Borough Council leader Councillor Gary Sumner and head of inward investment Andrew Wells for a behind-the-scenes tour, showcasing its CNC turning and milling capabilities and plans to invest in additional machinery to meet rising demand.
Billet Precision already works with local colleges on work experience and says it wants to formalise that pipeline by taking on apprentices as the business scales.
“Starting our own business was something we’d talked about for years,” said Will Casey, director and co-founder. “We all reached a similar point in our careers at the same time and decided to make it a reality.”
He added that Swindon’s location has proved a strategic advantage, with most customers now within an hour’s drive: “There are far more opportunities here than we first realised.”
Councillor Sumner described the visit as a “Swindon success story”, highlighting how three young engineers have turned vocational training into a company supplying some of the UK’s most advanced industries.
“Their commitment to innovation, skills development and apprenticeships is exactly the kind of ambition we want to encourage as we continue to grow Swindon’s economy,” he said.
