Prime minister makes whirlwind trip to home of Typhoon’s jet engine
Prime minister Rishi Sunak paid a visit to Rolls Royce last week to see the Typhoon fighter jet engine project and learn more about their nuclear reactor plans.
During his whirlwind trip to the home of the jet engine which powers the Eurofighter Typhoon, the PM opened the firm’s new Future Works R&D facility.
Accompanied by Filton and Bradley Stoke MP Jack Lopresti, the PM met engineers, technicians and apprentices from across the firm’s defence programmes and had a tour of the operation facility.
Rolls Royce is the UK’s lead manufacturer and support of the EJ200 engine.
Small Modular Reactor – a British solution to a global energy crisis
During his visit he spoke with Rolls-Royce Group president Chris Cholerton about the company’s plans to develop Small Modular Reactors – small nuclear power stations that can be built more quickly and cheaply than conventional nuclear plants.
“The small modular reactor is the UK’s first domestic nuclear technology in more than 20 years that will provide a British solution to a global energy crisis,” said Mr Cholerton.
We were delighted to welcome the prime minister and Jack Lopresti to our Bristol site and share with them the critical role we play in keeping the country and our allies safe,” he continued.
“What we do is integral to the UK’s air and naval programmes, including its contribution to the design and development of the next generation of fighter aircraft.
“Our Bristol facility is the home of the UK’s defence air power and propulsion capability, which retains high-value skills and jobs and contributes to the country’s share of the global export market.”
