Keir Starmer chooses Bristol tech centre to set of stall ahead of election
Labour leader Keir Starmer chose Bristol’s National Composites Centre to set out his stall in his first major speech of 2024 – election year.
The politician set out his ‘missions’: higher growth; reform of the planning system, safer streets with more police, cheaper bills with a new publicly-owned GB Energy, new technical excellence colleges, better mental health support and more teachers in schools, and an NHS “back on its feet” with a plan to cut waiting lists.
He said his party’s priority would be to achieve economic growth before cutting taxes, and said the next election offers the “potential for national renewal.”
Labour currently enjoys an 18-point lead in the polls. He gave his speech at Bristol & Bath Science Park at Emerson Green in the Filton & Bradley Stoke parliamentary constituency – a marginal seat held by the Conservatives since it was established in 2010, and on which Labour has set its sights.
