Calne law firm to throw open doors of historic offices

Calne law firm Bevirs will be throwing open its doors to the public on Saturday, September 10 – but not for legal advice.

Guests will have a chance to look around the 17th century Market Hill House, which contains interesting features including a 17th century stone Robert Adam fireplace rescued from a wing of nearby Castle House when it was demolished in 1974.

Around the time of its construction the house would have stood in the shadow of Calne’s previous Town Hall, which was built in the 17th century and demolished in 1882.

A blue plaque nearby on Buckeridges Steps commemorates the Town Hall and stocks that once stood opposite.

The event is part of Calne Heritage Week and, more widely, national Heritage Open Days, when members of the public are granted access to historic buildings not normally accessible to them.

The event takes place from 10am until 1pm. No booking is required.
