Swindon ranks #2 among Britain’s most economically effective cities
Swindon has come second in a new report analysing the UK’s most economically effective cities.
CoworkingCafe ranked 15 towns and cities combining five indicators: labour productivity, average weekly hours, employment rate, job density and business density.
The Wiltshire town came just behind Slough and ahead of Wokingham, with Reading at 11th place and Bracknell ranked 13th – a strong showing for the Thames Valley.
Swindon’s high raning was driven by “exceptionally strong labour productivity at £62.1 GVA/h and a stable, 77 per cent employment rate.”
The report’s authors wrote: “Its job and business density are average, but Swindon’s position along the M4 corridor supports advanced manufacturing, logistics and professional-service roles.
“The area also benefits from long-standing corporate operations in engineering, financial services, and research-intensive sectors alongside major redevelopment activity, including the transformation of the former Honda car plant into Panattoni Park, a project anticipated to generate around 7,000 jobs.
“This mix of strong productivity and reliable workforce engagement positions Swindon as the most economically effective city in the South West, by far.”
