Swindon hotel and conference centre Alexandra House announces closure

Swindon hotel and conference centre Alexandra House has announced its closure due to spiralling “operational and energy costs.”

With 14 meeting rooms, breakout spaces, and conference facilities, the four-star Wroughton Hotel has been a popular venue with local and regional businesses for 20 years.

Set in 20 acres, it has 151 bedrooms, and leisure facilities including a gym, sauna, steam room, pool, jacuzzi, and tennis courts which offered membership to non-residents.

It is also a popular wedding venue.

In a statement, operator The Venues Collection said: “Regrettably, Alexandra House will close on Thursday, February 29.

“Despite exploring all possible alternatives, due to ongoing high operational and energy costs, it is no longer financially viable for us to continue running the site.

“This decision has not been made lightly, and our utmost priority is to assist our customers.

“We are actively working to find alternative arrangements for any existing bookings, and all bookings beyond February 29 will receive a full refund.

“We extend our gratitude to everyone we have welcomed to Alexandra House over the years and appreciate the ongoing support and understanding from the local community.”

Tim Major of Swindon Chamber of Commerce, which holds regular events at Alexandra House, said: “We are saddened to hear the news that Alexandra House is closing.

“The hospitality industry was so badly affected during the pandemic and it’s such a shame to see a venue succumb to the continued effects and rising operational costs.

“The Chamber has held many successful events at the venue over the years and they have been valued members of the Chamber. We wish all the staff the very best for the future”.

The hotel was built following the decommissioning of RAF Princess Alexandra Hospital in 2004.
