Plans to upgrade M4 Junction 17 move to the next stage
Plans to upgrade Junction 17 of the M4 – the busy interchange connecting Chippenham to the motorway – have been approved and are moving to the next stage.
The Department for Transport has given Wiltshire Council the go-ahead for improvements as part of the Major Road Network programme.
Work will now progress towards the development of the full design for the project, with the aim of creating a more reliable, less congested, and better-connected transport network.
The DfT says it will contribute £26.087 million to the £31.937 million project, with Wiltshire Council picking up the rest of the bill.
The A350 junction has already undergone some improvements through the separate Chippenham Gateway project.
The council expects final plans to be submitted to the DfT in summer 2026, with the aim of starting work in winter 2026 and finishing by the end of 2027.
Cllr Nick Holder, cabinet member for Highways at Wiltshire Council, said: “It is fantastic news for Wiltshire that we have received approval from DfT for our outline business case.
“This is a key strategic junction for Wiltshire, which provides the vital link between the motorway network and the A350, connecting the towns in the west of the county, including Chippenham, Melksham and Trowbridge.
“It also provides a link to Malmesbury and the A429 in the north, along with local access to the B4122.”
Trowbridge benches – ‘monstrosities’ and ‘cheese graters’ or actually quite cool?
