At-risk arts centre launches fundraising campaign to – literally – keep the lights on
A Somerset arts centre says it is at risk of closure due to spiralling energy bills and has launched a fundraising campaign to – literally – keep the lights on.
Black Swan Arts in Frome is a hub for arts in the bohemian town, with a gallery featuring the work of young and emerging artists, a studio and workspace for creatives, and a shop and cafe.
But after energy bills doubled, the volunteer-run venue – which is due to celebrate its 40th anniversary next year – is appealing for £10,000 to keep going. Without enough donations, the trust that runs the arts centre says it might be forced to close, with a decision due at the end of April.
“We’ve been hit with a huge jump in our energy bills and all our maintenance costs, which threaten the existence of the centre and is likely to force us to close the doors,” say the trustees.
“That means there will be no more free exhibitions, no community events, no support for young people or vulnerable members of the community and no employment or volunteering opportunities.”
As of Friday, March 28 supports had raised just over £7,000 of the campaign total. To help Black Swan Arts reach its target, https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/blackswanarts
