Deal to turn Tropicana into a live events venue approved

A deal that could see Weston-super-Mare’s Tropicana transformed into a year-round live events venue with capacity for up to 10,000 people has been approved by councillors.

The 25-year lease agreement with Live Nation could the long-derelict seafront landmark back into use within a couple of years.

The move follows years of discussion about how to revive the former lido, which has stood largely unused for decades.

Under North Somerset Council’s plans, the redeveloped Tropicana is expected to reopen in 2028 and host a wide mix of live entertainment throughout the year, rather than operate only as a seasonal attraction.

Council leader Mike Bell said the vote marked a turning point for the project.

“This decision is great news and a significant step forward in the rebirth of the Tropicana,” he said.

“We know there is more work to be done, but I’m pleased councillors agreed tonight to progress with our preferred operator Live Nation leasing the Tropicana from the council for the next 25 years.

“Live Nation aims to make the Tropicana an all-year event venue which will ultimately increase footfall to our region, create higher accommodation occupancy rates, give our retail businesses an uplift, grow local supply chains and create more skills and employment opportunities for our communities.”

He added: “This is a significant moment in the history of the Tropicana, and indeed for Weston-super-Mare and the wider North Somerset area.

“Live Nation is an experienced operator with scale, reach and commercial capability. We’re not there yet, but this is a chance to breathe new life into the Trop and we look forward to working with Live Nation and delivering another key project for North Somerset.”

Subject to further details being agreed and following refurbishment, the Tropicana is expected to reopen in 2028, when Live Nation plans to deliver a programme of world class live entertainment.

Once complete, and subject to planning consent, it’s anticipated that the Tropicana will be able to accommodate audiences of up to 10,000 people.

On securing the approval of councillors, Eddie Kemsley of Live Nation said: “We are very excited to be working with North Somerset Council to bring the Tropicana back to life with a programme of music and live events from 2028.

“We look forward to working with local businesses, stakeholders and members of the public and community in the coming months to ensure a successful and happy start to this next chapter for the venue.”
