Extension sought for Wiltshire’s largest broom cupboard

Wiltshire’s largest broom cupboard could be expanded under plans unveiled by its owner.

Hillbrush – a manufacturer of brushes and brooms which counts the Royal Family among its customers – has applied for planning permission to extend an existing storage facility at its headquarters near Mere.

The century-old third-generation family business, which exports to 90 countries, says it has outgrown the storage facilities it built at its Norwood Park HQ, near the A303, five years ago.

“The storage capacity of this building has been exceeded for some time, due to the continual growth of the company,” says the applicant.

The proposed building is on a previously developed brownfield site, and the company stresses that the proposed extension would be in keeping with building currently on the site in both size and design, with grey metal external walls and roof.

The L-shaped extension would measure approximately 60 metres by 75 metres at its longest lengths. The building would be screened by existing trees.

A decision from Wiltshire Council planners is expected in February.
