Derelict rail HQ set for regeneration
Plans to regenerate the area around Swindon’s Signal Point office block are steaming ahead.
The office block, which sits directly above the station, has been vacant for a number of years and is a key part of plans to turn more than 100 acres of brownfield land surrounding Swindon railway station into a new commercial, educational, and residential district.
Network Rail has identified the land around Swindon’s railway station as a priority regeneration programme to create thousands of new jobs and hundreds of new homes and plans to bring Signal Point back into use are now being explored by the rail industry as part of the wider plans.
Swindon Borough Council secured £100,000 from Homes England to support the development of detailed designs for a new northern entrance to the station and a new multi‑storey car park on the existing north car park site.
A further £200,000 has also been secured by the Council to develop a comprehensive business case and proposition, while senior representatives from the Council will showcase the regeneration site, known as Knowledge Central, and other invest opportunities in Swindon at UKREiiF – the UK’s Real Estate Investment & Infrastructure Forum – in May.
Creating the new entrance and consolidated parking facility will free up under‑utilised surface car parks on the south side of the railway, enabling further development and supporting the long‑term regeneration of the area.
Collectively, these initiatives represent an important step in transforming well‑located brownfield land into a high‑quality mixed‑use district supporting new employment space, new homes, and a modern gateway into the town.
The area plays a central role in the Council’s Heart of Swindon vision, which aims to reposition the town centre as a vibrant, attractive and economically resilient destination.
A dedicated partnership, which brings together the Council, the rail industry, Homes England, the Department for Business and Trade, UK Research and Innovation and Business West, is now working to accelerate delivery and unlock the site’s full potential.
Councillor Jim Robbins, leader of Swindon Borough Council, said: “I’m really pleased to see progress being made to bring Signal Point back into use.
“For far too long it has stood as a derelict eyesore at the top of our railway station, so the fact this work is now moving forward is extremely positive.
“The transformation of the station and surrounding land is an important part of our wider Heart of Swindon vision and one of our flagship town centre regeneration schemes.
“Improving the station will unlock new development and help create a gateway Swindon can be proud of.
“There’s still a lot to do, but working closely together with our partners, I’m confident we can transform this key site for the benefit of residents, businesses and future investment.”
