Salisbury sets out stall for landmark Charter Market anniversary

Salisbury is preparing to celebrate its 800th anniversary next year. In 2027 it will be eight centuries since it received the royal charter that allowed it to hold a weekly charter market.

The charter, granted by Henry III, made Salisbury a city – and its charter market continues to this day.

The 15th century market place with its four crosses – only one of which, the Poultry Cross, still stands today – grew up around it.

From May to November next year the city will come alive with events, performances, exhibitions, talks, trails and community projects celebrating Salisbury’s history, creativity and future.

The business community are being invited to take part in shaping the celebrations.

“The heart of the programme will be the people who live, work and create here,” said a spokesperson for Salisbury 800.

“We’re building a celebration that feels authentically Salisbury, rooted in community involvement, and we’d love you to be part of it through ideas, volunteering, partnerships or sponsorship.”
