Good Energy welcomes government’s EV charging announcement

Renewable energy supplier Good Energy has welcomed the government’s announcement that new homes and business premises will be required to have electric vehicle charging points from next year.

The government has already announced that the sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be banned from 2030 – although the motor industry and consumers are already driving the move towards a fossil fuel-free motoring landscape.

Now the government wants new homes to come equipped with a way of charging those vehicles, in the form of charging points.

Buildings with more than 10 parking spaces that have ‘major renovations’ will also be expected to provide the facility.

Prime minister Boris Johnson told the CBI on Monday: “We will require new homes and buildings to have EV charging points – with another 145,000 charging points to be installed thanks to these regulations.

“We are investing in new projects to turn wind power into hydrogen and our net-zero strategy is expected to trigger about £90 billion of private sector investment, driving the creation of high wage high skilled jobs as part of our mission to unite and level up across the country.”

The move is expected to add up to 145,000 extra charging points every year.

Responding to the news, Nigel Pocklington, CEO of  Chippenham-based Good Energy, said: “This is good news: making it simpler and easier to charge and pay is the big challenge in the electric vehicle transition.

“It is vital we move at pace to ensure EVs can play a central role in enabling a fully flexible, decentralised system.”

Good Energy is a major shareholder in Bristol-based Zap-Map, the UK’s leading electric vehicle mapping service.
