Box housebuilder Backhouse wins award for Calne development

A housing development in Calne has been named one of the best in the country.

Housebuilder Backhouse’s Merlin Rise project scooped Silver in the What House? Awards for best residential development.

Judges praised “an outstanding scheme of homes including feature windows to increase their visual impact, adding interest and creating focal points while at the same time optimising the natural daylight that the openings capture.”

The result followed more awards for Box-based Backhouse in November.

Having been crowned best residential development at the Michelmores awards earlier in the month, which recognises the best of housebuilding in the South West, Backhouse also scooped the runners-up the prestigious Building magazine awards.

The firm was also shortlisted in Architects Journal for its Calne development this year.

Ian Jones, managing director at Backhouse, said: “It has been an incredible month for Backhouse and the recognition has really put us on the housebuilding map.

“We have been building our reputation over the last five years and this has been down to a lot of hard work from the whole team.

“We delighted to receive such positive recognition for our Merlin Rise development and to win this important industry award.

“Enormous thanks should go to the talented architects at Clifton Emery for bringing our vision of a better new home to life and to everyone involved in delivering this award-winning neighbourhood, which has proved a great success with residents.”

Graeme Fuell, director at Bristol-based Clifton Emery architects, said: “I’m delighted for Backhouse. They have chosen to go a different route from so many housebuilders and made design a real standout feature on all their homes.”
