Subaru’s first global all-electric vehicle makes its debut

Subaru’s first global all-electric vehicle has been unveiled in Tokyo.

The Solterra – the name comes from the Latin words for Sun and earth to recognise the car’s environmentally-friendly credentials – was developed with Toyota and is the first Subaru vehicle to be built on the battery electric vehicle dedicated e-Subaru platform.

The platform enables to roll out of various types of EVs efficiently by combining multiple modules and components, such as the front, centre and rear of a vehicle.

The Solterra combines Subaru’s all-wheel-drive technology with Toyota’s vehicle electrification technology.

Buyers will have a choice of two powertrains – a single-motor system which produces 201bhp and has a maximum range of 330 miles, and a dual-motor four wheel drive option, which has a combined output of 215bhp and a range of 285 miles. Both are powered by a 71.4kWh battery pack.

The dual motor comes with an X-Mode AWD drivetrain setting, which makes it perfect for the rough roads for which the brand is renowned.

A European launch is expected in mid-2022.
