Swindon Council rebrands waste and power subsidiary

Swindon Commercial Services Ltd, a wholly owned company of Swindon Borough Council, has been renamed Public Power Solutions Ltd (PPS) to reflect its new UK-wide role as a provider of innovative power and waste solutions for local authorities and the public sector.

The newly-rebranded Public Power Solutions is the only large-scale solar farm developer in the public sector, developing over 50MW of large-scale solar arrays in 2014, including Wroughton Airfield Solar Park.

It also runs the UK’s only municipal solid waste-based solid recovered fuel plant at its recycling centre in Swindon.

At the purpose-built facility in Swindon, 48,000 tonnes of municipal waste is collected each year from local households and businesses and a further 52,000 tonnes of trade and commercial waste can be brought to the site.

After the recyclables are removed, what is left is sorted, shredded and dried to produce a high-energy fuel with a calorific content equal to coal.

More than 95 percent of waste is turned into fuel, diverting it from landfill and resulting in savings of around £2 million a year in landfill tax.

It now aims to roll out its expertise to help other public sector organisations in the UK with their waste processing and renewable power production projects.

Commercial director James Owen said: “We’re no longer just about providing services solely for Swindon and so we needed a new name to reflect this. Our business is generating renewable power, producing solid recovered fuel from waste, and serving local communities.

“Public Power Solutions’ business model can be deployed to the benefit of any local authority across the country – helping to save council taxpayers’ money and offering greener, more sustainable solutions.

“Our new brand name reflects our mission to become a successful and respected provider of sustainable waste and power solutions for the benefit of the public sector and their local communities.”
