Fibre optic manufacturing facility changes hands

A Swindon company that makes fibre optic cable for the telecoms industry has changed hands.

AFL opened its expanded manufacturing facility in Swindon in 2021, making a new kind of fibre-to-the-home cable that was the first in the UK and Europe.

AFL was owned by Fujikura, a world leader in fibre optics, and the Japanese ambassador, Masahiko Ito, cut the ribbon at the extended Radway Road facility.

Jody Gallagher, president and CEO of AFL, said the plant would be: “the engine for the economy of the future.”

Now Italian company Tratos Cavi Spa has acquired AFL Telecommunications Europe Ltd in the UK – and has said that manufacturing will continue at the Swindon plant.

Elisabetta Bragagni Capaccini, CEO of Tratos Cavi Spa, said: “Tratos and AFL’s Swindon plant share a strong commitment to quality products and services to core customers in the power utility, rail and oil and gas markets.”

“Adding their unique product capabilities, staff technical expertise and EMEA sales team to our company will strengthen Tratos’ position in these markets enabling us to offer a combined portfolio of market-leading electrical and optical cables to our customers.”
