Work starts at the TNT depot

Work starts on TNT’s £15.5m super-depot

Delivery firm TNT is to open a new £15.5m super-depot in Swindon, creating around 250 jobs.

The 55,000 sq ft depot will occupy a 10-acre site at G Park at South Marston, next to the B&Q depot. More than 100 loading bays will accommodate 40 long-haul trailers.

The site should be operational by the summer.

Simon Harper, director of operations at TNT UK, said: “Coupled with TNT’s £35m investment in its fleet of vehicles, the new Swindon sortation centre will enable us to keep parcels destined for customers in the South West within the region, thereby cutting delivery times.

“Relieving some of the burden on our depots serving areas around Exeter, Bodmin, Bristol, Reading, Slough, Southampton and Byfleet, will enable TNT to increase our speed and efficiency.

“This will benefit local business and others around the UK because it enables us to efficiently pre-sort shipments going to our main sorting hubs at Kingsbury and Atherstone in the Midlands.”

Work started on Tuesday, with MP Justin Tomlinson cutting the first turf.

Mr Tomlinson (pictured right) said: ”This is yet another vote of confidence in the growing Swindon economy.

“This £10m investment will create 250 new jobs, building on the 7,000 new jobs created since 2010.

“We have seen unemployment fall by a staggering 58%, the fastest growth rate of new businesses in the South-West and continuous new investment in our town. Swindon is very much on the up.

“The Council should also be praised for making extra efforts to attract new industry and skilled jobs to Swindon. We have a diverse, skilled workforce, we have a great location on the M4 with excellent links to the M5 and we have sites ready for businesses to move onto.

“We have a new UTC (University Technical College) which is working with the business community to create skills and jobs for the future.

“We have £119m investment in projects from the LEP (Swindon & Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership) coming into the town. It’s a very exciting time to be in Swindon. We are certainly a town that is very much on the up.”
